Maybe it’s the mud. Maybe it’s the cowbells and outrageous fans. Maybe it’s feeling like a kid again and having a blast charging your bike around a course. Maybe it’s all of that, but whatever it is, I love cyclocross.
And of course well before I ever knew about the real cyclocross my friends and I raced our big old steel Schwinns on trails in the woods and over obstacles in our back yards. Didn’t you? We lit our tires on fire with lighter fluid and jumped fences, didn’t you? We played bike demolition derby, didn’t you? That’s all like CX isn’t it?
Maybe that’s why I love Cyclocross — me and my friends invented it, and we didn’t even know it.
We had everything but the fans and the beer. Hey, we were ten, we didn’t get the beer until we were 12 and then we just needed the fans, but never got them either.
PS – This is not me although I think he’s pretty badass like that in the cold like that, it’s what we call wearing a “beer” coat. And I have those socks.
