Thank you Tommeke.

Tom Boonen ended his professional cycling career this past weekend by placing 13th in the toughest one day race there is — Paris-Roubaix.

This is my special “Thank you Tommeke” for Mr Boonen. He has been a great competitor to watch and I hear he’s a real nice guy — all class.

Cloud Gate Sculpture.

Know locally as the Chicago Bean, “Cloud Gate” is a public sculpture by Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor, that is the centerpiece of AT&T Plaza at Millennium Park in the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois.

Travelers from around the world take amazing pictures of themselves and the Chicago skyline reflected in the sculpture. A very cool place to watch yourself ride your bike.

Windy city ride.

If you’ve ever ridden your bike in Chicago then you know the Lakefront path that runs between Lake Michigan and along Lakeshore Drive. It’s shared space with runners, walkers and those notorious roller-bladers that seem to take up the entire lane.

Along with the obsticles on the path you get the prevailing winds along the waterfront working for or against you depending on your direction. But the views of the city are amazing and it always is alive with activity anytime of the day. Make it a place to visit next time you’re in the windy city.

Coppi on the Izoard | Original Cycling Art

Fausto Coppi 1949.

History has it that on his 35th birthday, Gino Bartali made a pact with Fausto Coppi — “Let me have today, and the Tour is yours.”

Truth or fiction, the deals that went down between the heads of state is just one of the things that makes the history of the Tour de France so fascinating.

This is my take on Coppi as the moto follows him up the Izoard in 1949. Who will take the Izoard this year when the Tour visits again? I can’t wait to find out, and I’ll be there!

Romain Bardet.

It’s been years since France has had a real contender for the Yellow Jersey at the Tour de France — will this be the year of Romain Bardet? The hopes of a new generation of cycling fans ride squarely on his frail shoulders — only time will tell us how this story ends.

My drawing is meant to capture the mood of anticipation for our hero’s arrival. We’ve all felt this at some point, it’s what I love about drawing – sharing human moments.

The man with the plan.

John Degenkolb of team Trek-Segafredo is surely one of the classics men that should be considered in Sunday’s Tour of Flanders. A strong rider with a Paris-Roubaix win under his belt can never be discounted.

Now maybe my plan for him to climb the Muur van Geraardsberen is a bit far fetched but I’m sure hoping he and Trek-Segafredo have a plan. In fact I’m sure of it!

The 55 km attack!

Philippe Gilbert didn’t just win the Tour of Flanders — he crushed it from 55 km to the final line. Where he got off his bicycle, lifted it overhead and walked across the line!

That is how they do it in Belgium with style. What a day!

The road less traveled.

They say a lot of different things about the road less traveled. I say it’s littered with potholes and it’s worth your time to take it now and again.

I spend a lot of time in the winter months riding alone and finding my way around the ugly roads in Wisconsin and Illinois. Ugly because of their condition but not their locations. Many of the worst roads I ride are the most interesting and visually stimulating if not physically also. Picking my way around holes, rocks and downed trees makes my slow winter rides all that much better.

Now go get lost, it’s fun.

A rock and a hammer.

Greg Van Avermaet ( BMC) winner of 2017 Paris-Roubaix hammered the cobbles with a well planned, well timed and perfectly executed bike ride. His BMC teammates lead the way and paved his road to glory and he did not disappoint them. It was a great day to be a cycling fan watching the day unfold.

Hometown support for Trek.

I live just a couple of hours drive from Trek HQ in Waterloo, WI and I must admit the local support for the Trek-Segafredo Cycling Team is pretty obvious.

So maybe I may exaggerate a wee little bit here, but having a world-class company and team like Trek in the neighborhood is very exciting for most of us locals.

The original idea for this drawing came from an idea I call “Jersey Cows” — That is I think it would be fun to make an entire peloton of “Jersey Cows”. Until I get around to it, this one will have to live on it’s own.

My favorite part of this drawing is actually the Bontrager shoes, it’s all about the details.
